I have deep roots with 1and1.com. I launched my first several websites on 1and1.com because of their ridiculously low price ($1.99 a month at the time). I went from $1.99 a month in expenses and no income to $1.99 a month in expenses and over $3,000 in income. That’s a mighty profit, and for me, it was a great start. Alas, things would not remain beneficial, and unfortunately our relationship was a self destructive one.

1and1.com excels at being the neophyte web host- the web host that you use when you know absolutely nothing about web hosting or the internet. Try and do something more advanced, however, and 1and1 becomes that painful thorn in your side that prohibits you from doing anything interesting.

Wordpress? I don’t think so.

That’s right. I tried to isntall Wordpress and three different domains and it only works on one. Same install process, all the configuration settings are correct. 1and1 offers me no support, and besides, I don’t feel like waiting on hold for 45 minutes again (did I mention their service is horrible?).  Where I can log on to a different web host and have Wordpress working in mere minutes (or seconds if the host has Fantastico Deluxe intalled), I find myself toiling away trying to figure out why the heck 1and1 won’t let Wordpress work.

Then I give up, and now my domains are no longer hosted with 1and1.  Too bad- I have a lot of history with them.  I’d love to make this review longer, but unfortunately I’ve nothing positive to say about 1and1.com. Do yourself a favor and find a different web host.

I too use 1and1 for most of my domains because of the price. I agree with your assesment of them being great for beginners. I ran into several “gotchas” while trying to install various scripts (such as ensuring your rewrite base is set properly) and switched some domains to other hosts to get things working. Now that I’ve found (hopefully) all the little idiosyncracies, I have no problems recommending them to complete noobs and experienced pros, but if you’re an intermediate with no desire to learn more, I’d recommend nearly anyone else (except GoDaddy who seems to like to nickel and dime you to death).

Perhaps this review came off a little harsh, as they do have a few features (such as their wonderfully intuitive WYSIWYG website builder) that many newbies will find incredibly useful (as I did).

Like you said, some things just don’t work. This is why I recommend other hosts.

Thanks for your comment :)

1and1 can be quite good if you are lucky, unfortunately I would not recommend them because some aspects of their business practices are horrible and near-fraudulent. Forget about being upset about sorting out a tech problem, thats nothing, if you have a billing problem, their policy is to transfer the bill to NCO Financial Debt collection just like that, which harrasses the customer ( credit rating?) regarless of the validity (or legality) of the fee or charge in question.
